I began taking herbal teas and acupuncture treatment with Dr. Ning X. Fu in February 1995. At that time, I had been diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (specifically, lupus nephritis) for a little more than four years. My kidneys were permanently scarred from when I was hospitalized (in October 1990) with kidney failure. Despite initial benefits from conventional drugs (like a high dose of Prednisone, intravenous Cyclophosphamide therapy, and Cyclosporine), I soon discovered that the side effects outweighed the benefits. I had high blood pressure from both the Prednisone and Cyclosporine (which then had to be controlled by more medication), and wight gain. After each Cyclophosphamide treatment, I endured nausea and vomiting bouts that lasted up to three days, as well as temporary, but significant, decrease in my white blood cells. Even now, I have a higher chance of getting ovarian cancer than other women because of my Cyclophosphamide treatment.

When I began my acupuncture and herbal treatment with Dr. Fu, I had stopped both Cyclophosphamide and Cyclosporine therapies completely and reduced my Prednisone intake to 15 mg every other day (a relatively low dose), because they were no longed effectively fighting against the lupus nephritis. My nephrologist had not known what other conventional medicines or therapies I could take. At the time, both my C3 and C4 levels were decreased, my ANA titer was positive, and my urinary protein excretion was at 3,013 mg (and getting worse each month). My nephrologist had told me that I faced the possibility of further scarring on my kidneys and kidney failure, if my condition kept worsening. However, a month after acupuncture and herbal treatment, my ANA titer became negative and my C3 and C4 levels were steadily getting better. Moreover, my urinary protein excretion steadily decreased roughly 1,000 mg each month-- to its present level at 900 mg. I do not expect it to get much lower than that because, as stated earlier, my kidneys are permanently scarred. At present, all my kidney functions are normal and have been normal for the past four months. My ANA titer has remained negative. I have been able to reduce my Prednisone intake to 10 mg every other day, the lowest it has ever been since I was diagnosed.

I am very pleased with the acupuncture and herbal treatment not only because it has been successful thus far in treating my lupus nephritis, but also because it has had no side effects. I truly believe that I am in recession at this time because of my acupuncture therapy and herbal treatment with Dr. Fu.
